How to Delete a WhatsApp Group

This article explains how administrators and members can delete a WhatsApp group. The information in this article applies to WhatsApp for iOS and Android.

How to Delete a WhatsApp Group as an Administrator

If you have created a WhatsApp group chat, it is simple to delete it entirely. As an administrator, you must first remove each group member before deleting the group.

Open WhatsApp and select the subject name of the group you wish to delete.
Tap the name of the group at the top of the screen.
The Group Info display panel appears. Tap the name of the first person you wish to remove from the meeting from the Participants section.
A slide-out menu appears from the bottom of the screen. Tap Remove from Group.
You’re asked to confirm the removal of this member. Tap Remove.
Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each member of the group other than yourself.
Tap Exit Group, located at the bottom of the Group Info screen.
Tap Exit Group again when the confirmation question appears.
A message at the top of the screen indicates that you are no longer a member of this group. Tap Delete Group at the bottom of the display.
Tap Delete Group again when the confirmation question appears. Your WhatsApp group is deleted.

How to Exit and Delete a WhatsApp Group as a Member

You must exit a group chat in order to remove it from your chat list.

When a participant leaves a group chat, they will no longer see any new messages. However, they are able to view the chat history and will have access to the chat until it is deleted.

Open WhatsApp and tap the subject name of the group you wish to delete.
Tap the name of the group at the top of the screen.
The Group Info screen displays. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Exit Group.
Tap Exit Group again when the confirmation question appears. Alternatively, tap Mute Instead to mute the group and not be alerted to new messages.
You will see a message indicating that you are no longer a member of this group. You will see the group chat on your chat list, but it will say You left.
Swipe left on the chat and tap Archive to archive the chat.
Tap More > Delete Group, and then tap Delete Group a second time to confirm. The group chat will be removed from your list.

How to Clear a WhatsApp Group Chat

You can clear a group’s chat history without deleting it, allowing you to erase previous conversations while remaining an active member.

Open WhatsApp and tap the subject name of the group you wish to clear.
Tap the name of the group at the top of the screen.
The Group Info screen displays. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Clear Chat. To create a backup of your group chat log before deleting it, tap Export Chat and follow the on-screen instructions.
Select Delete all messages to clear the entire chat log up until this point. If you have starred messages, you also get the option to Delete all except starred.
